You may be seeing more and more electric vehicles (EVs) on the roads these days. Their popularity is soaring, especially with more and more people looking to save on the high cost of gas while saving the environment at the same time. More than 10 million electric cars traveled global roads in 2020, with battery electric models such as Tesla driving the expansion, according to IEA. This represented a 43 percent increase over 2019.
Some more takeaways:
- Despite the pandemic, electric car registrations increased in 2020.
- Three million new electric cars were registered in 2020.
- Europe led with 1.4 million new registrations for the first time, followed by China with1.2 million registrations and the U.S. with 295,000.
- The number of EVs in the U.S. grew from 16,000 to two million in 10 years, according to Electrek.
- In 2020, the United States produced nearly four times as much clean electricity from wind and solar as it did in 2011.
There’s no denying the increasing surge in popularity of electric vehicles. Missouri in particular is enjoying that surge, with sales of plug-in passenger cars achieving a nine percent global market share of new car sales in 2021, up from more than four percent in 2020 and 2.5 percent in 2019, says Southeast Missourian.
Consequently, the growth in numbers of local charging stations throughout Southeast Missouri has been rising as well. In fact, Southeast Missouri is seeing more activity in the first month of 2022 than it did in the last six months of 2021.
Benefits of Electric Vehicles
1. Save on Fuel
On a cost-per-mile basis, a fully electric car will cost you a quarter or less of what a traditional gas-powered car would. With the average cost of gas creeping up to $4 a gallon in Missouri, these savings can really add up.
2. Are Cheaper to Maintain
Yes, the sale price of an electric vehicle is pretty similar to a comparable gas vehicle, but using an EV is much cheaper when you consider the full lifetime of the vehicle. From enhanced fuel efficiency and tax incentives to lower cost of electricity and lower maintenance requirements, you will end up spending a lot less on an electric vehicle over time.
3. Are Easy and Fast to Charge at Home
Charging an EV at home is simple, fast and cost efficient. When you need a charge, all you have to do is plug in the charging cable right there in your garage. It’s super easy: just like charging your smart phone. You can get to full capacity in five to 10 hours so it’s ready to go when you are.
